AUSTIN, Texas — The University of Texas Golf Club — designed by alumnus and Austin-native Roy Bechtol along with Randy Russell — will be on display May 13-15 when it hosts the Austin Regional of the NCAA men’s golf championship.
It’s the sixth time in the 21-year history of the UT Golf Club that the facility has hosted a men’s NCAA regional and the first time since 2019. UT Golf Club also hosted a women’s NCAA regional in 2008 and 2018.
“We are honored and excited that the NCAA has again chosen our course at the University of Texas Golf Club as a regional host,” Bechtol said. “We designed this course to be a test for the best collegiate golfers and over the years it’s proven to be a fair and challenging. I have never seen the course in better shape.”

The success of the UT Golf Club has enabled staff to refine the golf course’s playability and visual appeal through the years, with Bechtol consulting and overseeing many of the tweaks and changes. Having elite collegiate golfers playing the course regularly has prompted back tee additions that have stretched the total yardage to 7,412, nearly 400 yards longer than when the club opened.
The design of the course has dramatic pacing as it winds through classic Central Texas elevation changes and Canyonlands. A hot start is possible with holes that aren’t overly-long at Nos. 1, 2 and 4.
The defining stretch of the opening nine awaits, beginning with the disorienting 461-yard downhill-then-uphill par 4 fifth, which demands a great tee shot that leads to an unforgiving approach. Nos. 6 and 7 (both par 4s) are demanding driving holes, the former because of a deep canyon lurking right and short of the green and the latter sporting the difficulty of a sloping fairway and a rippling water feature lining the entire left side of the hole.
The 237-yard par 3 eighth plays into the win this time of year. Expect the upper-crust collegiate golfers to get aggressive at reachable par 5s at the ninth and 9 and 11 as well as the short par 4 13th and the winding par 5 14th.
At the green on 472-yard par-4 15th golfers arrive at the most scenic section of UT Golf Club, as the putting surface and its surrounds sit on a bluff overlooking Lake Austin and the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve some 300 feet below.
The final three holes are highlight by brutal length at the par 3 16th (248 yards) and the 517-yard par 4 closing hole. The 18th ends on a green in the shadow of the club’s opulent clubhouse, adding drama and the need for excellent shotmaking.
The host Longhorns will be one of 13 teams to compete in the Austin Regional. The 54-hole tournament will also feature 10 individual players, with the top five teams and the low individual not on those five qualifying teams advancing to the NCAA Championship, scheduled for May 24-29 at Omni La Costa in Carlsbad, California.
