Spieth Lower 40

The Spieth Lower 40 is a six-hole par-3 course built on 4-1/2 acres between the members’ range and the first hole at the University of Texas Golf Club.

Jordan Spieth is a three-time majors champion who spent three semesters competing as a Longhorn. He was part of Texas’ 2012 NCAA Championship team. His design contributions to the project include everything from the placement of the green complexes to elevations and contours.

Holes range from 80-125 yards and greens range from 2,800 to 4,000 square feet. The course has four different types of grasses. The greens are challenging and reward a good shot.

Canyon Nine Golf Course

Bechtol,Russel, Kite Golf designed Canyon Nine with a different methodology than the nearby 18-hole Championship Course, which is privately owned. They envisioned a series of controlled hitting areas rather than traditional tee boxes. You will notice these areas denoted on all holes. Varying your tee-off location will help reduce wear and tear to isolated tees. Holes #5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 each incorporate two separate hitting areas to appeal to different levels of play. Hole #9 is the course’s signature hole encompassing a beautiful water feature.

Austin Beach Club

12 Hole Par 3

Austin Beach Club’s golf course is being designed by Roy Bechtol, president of Austin-based planning, landscape and golf architectural firm Planned Environments. He has developed courses at the Barton Creek Resort, the University of Texas Golf Club and Escondido in Horseshoe Bay.

Bechtol said he believes smaller courses like the 12-hole planned at Austin Beach Club is the wave of the future.

“Golf is a demanding game, to say the least. I think you’re seeing a move afoot with younger millennials to play in a way that takes less time and is more fun,” he said. “This just opens it up to so much more of the populace to fall in love with the game. It’s a much quicker way to spend the day.”

A 12-hole short course can be played in two hours, versus an average of four to six hours to play 18 holes.

“What we’re trying to create at the Austin Beach Club is to play real golf, get outdoors, get away from computers,” said Bechtol, who is collaborating with course designer Jim Fazio Jr. on the project. “It’s a way to get the whole family out in a fun environment.”

Steve Termeer, general manager at the UT Texas Golf Club, said courses like the one planned at Austin Beach Club are what many players are seeking.
